Melanocortin Receptor
The melanocortin receptors are a family of five GPCRs (MC1R through MC5R) activated by melanocortin peptides derived from pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC). MC1R mediates melanogenesis in skin, MC2R is the ACTH receptor, MC3R and MC4R are involved in energy homeostasis, and MC5R is found in exocrine glands.
MT-II (Melanotan II) is a non-selective melanocortin receptor agonist that binds MC1R through MC5R. KPV is derived from the C-terminal fragment of alpha-MSH, the endogenous melanocortin ligand.
