Antioxidant
A molecule that inhibits oxidation of other molecules by neutralizing reactive oxygen species (ROS) and free radicals.
Reference / Full Definition
An antioxidant is a compound that prevents or reduces oxidative damage by neutralizing reactive oxygen species (ROS) and free radicals. Oxidative stress — an imbalance between ROS production and antioxidant defense — is associated with cellular damage in research models.
Glutathione (GSH) is the most abundant intracellular antioxidant, serving as the primary substrate for glutathione peroxidase. NAD+ functions as a cofactor for PARP enzymes involved in DNA repair following oxidative damage. SS-31 has been studied for its interactions with mitochondrial electron transport, a major source of intracellular ROS.
