DSIP: Research on the Delta Sleep-Inducing Peptide
Healthy Aminos Research Team · · 6 min read
Molecular Profile
[DSIP](/peptides/cognitive/dsip) (Delta Sleep-Inducing Peptide) is a naturally occurring nonapeptide with the sequence Trp-Ala-Gly-Gly-Asp-Ala-Ser-Gly-Glu. MW: 848.81 Da (CAS: 62568-57-4). The peptide was first isolated from cerebral venous blood of rabbits during electrically induced sleep by Schoenenberger and Monnier in 1977.
DSIP is classified as a neuromodulatory peptide and has been detected in both central nervous system tissue and peripheral blood, suggesting it may function as both a neurotransmitter and a circulating factor.
Published Research
### Human Sleep Study
[Schneider-Helmert & Schoenenberger (1992)](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/1299794/) conducted a study examining DSIP in human subjects with chronic insomnia. The authors reported observations on EEG-measured sleep architecture, including delta wave (slow-wave sleep) parameters. The study documented changes in sleep latency and sleep efficiency measurements in the treatment group.
### Mitochondrial Respiration
[Khvatova et al. (2003)](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/12668217/) examined DSIP's effects on mitochondrial respiration in rat brain tissue preparations. The study reported observations on respiratory chain activity, suggesting interactions between the peptide and mitochondrial function that extend beyond its initially characterized sleep-related research.
### Circadian Characterization
[Karnecki et al. (1994)](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/8175965/) characterized diurnal fluctuations of DSIP-like immunoreactivity in human plasma. The study documented a circadian pattern of DSIP levels, with concentrations varying across the 24-hour cycle in a pattern corresponding to sleep-wake timing.
Research Status
DSIP research spans cell culture, animal models, and limited human studies. The peptide's role in sleep architecture research makes it unique among commonly studied research peptides. It is not FDA-approved.
